Confirmation

Confirmation for High School Teens

Confirmation preparation takes place in the context of a parish community and is a two-year process in our diocese.  Families should be registered members of the parish.  For more information or to register, please contact the parish office.


Canonical Requirements


Prior Baptism: Must be a baptized Catholic with a recent baptismal certificate on file.

  • Age of Reason: Usually received between the age of discretion (about 7) and age 16 in the Latin rite, depending on local diocesan rules.
  • State of Grace: Must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) beforehand.
  • Intention: Must have the desire to receive the sacrament and live as a committed disciple of Jesus Christ.

 

Preparation and Parish Steps

  • Classes:  Youth are prepared for the Sacrament of Confirmation beginning in the 9th grade and are confirmed in the 10th grade.  Preparation includes participation in Sunday Life Nights as well as periodic classes throughout the year.
  • Retreats: Participate in a Confirmation retreat or reflection day.
  • Mass Attendance: Regular participation in Sunday Mass.
  • Service: Fulfill local parish requirements for community or church service hours.

 

Sponsor Requirements

  • Age: Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Initiation: Must have already received Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
  • Standing: Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.

Adults who have not received Confirmation

Adults who were baptized as Catholics as infants but have not practiced their faith since childhood nor received subsequent sacraments, are asked to join the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).  Please contact our OCIA coordinator for more information.
